বৈষম্য বিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনে চট্টগ্রামের প্রথম শহীদ ওয়াসিম আকরাম। ১৬ জুলাই বেলা ৩টার দিকে চট্টগ্রামের মুরাদপুর এলাকায় আন্দোলনকারীদের সঙ্গে পুলিশ ও ছাত্রলীগের দ্বিমুখী সংঘর্ষে ওয়াসিম শহীদ হন। চট্টগ্রাম কলেজের সমাজবিজ্ঞান অনুষদে স্নাতক তৃতীয় বর্ষে অধ্যয়নরত ওয়াসিম চট্টগ্রাম কলেজ ছাত্রদলের আহ্বায়ক কমিটির সদস্য ছিলেন। তিনি চকবাজার এলাকার একটি মেসে থাকতেন। ওয়াসিমের সহপাঠি ইমরান হোসেন ও তৌহিদুল ইসলামের সাথে আলাপকালে এই প্রতিবেদককে তারা বলেন, বৈষম্যবিরোধী আন্দোলনের শুরু থেকেই সক্রিয় ছিলেন ওয়াসিম। তিনি নগরীর প্রতিটি কর্মসূচিতে অংশ নিতেন। আন্দোলন ধীরে ধীরে সহিংস হয়ে উঠলেও দমে যাননি স্বৈরাচারবিরোধী অকুতোভয় এ বীর সেনানী। বরং অন্য সহযোদ্ধাদের মতোই আরো বেশি সংগ্রামী চেতনায় উদ্বুদ্ধ হয়েছিলেন। প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীরা জানান, মধ্য জুলাইয়ে পরিস্থিতি মারমুখী হয়ে ওঠে। আমরা জানতে পারি, ১৬ জুলাই দুপুর থেকে নগরীর বিভিন্ন মোড়ে অবস্থান নেয় ছাত্রলীগ ও যুবলীগের নেতাকর্মীরা। দুই নম্বর গেট এলাকায় একটি বাস ভাংচুর করে তারা। বিকেল ৩টা থেকে নগরীর মুরাদপুর, ২ নং গেট ও ষোলশহরের আশপাশের এলাকায় কোটা আন্দোলনকারীদের সাথে ছাত্রলীগ-যুবলীগ ও পুলিশের মধ্যে সংঘর্ষের ঘটনা ঘটে। সংঘর্ষের শুরুতে লাঠিপেটা করা হলেও, পরে গুলিবর্ষণ করে পুলিশ। এ সময় পুলিশের সাথে সাদা পোষাকের কয়েকজন অস্ত্রধারীকে গুলি ছুড়তে দেখা যায়। বেশ কিছু ককটেলও বিস্ফোরিত হয়। আন্দোলনকারীরা ছত্রভঙ্গ হয়ে এদিক-সেদিক ছুটোছুটি শুরু করে। পরে তারা ইট পাটকেল নিক্ষেপ করতে থাকে। এভাবে অনেক্ষণ চলতে থাকে ধাওয়া পাল্টা-ধাওয়া। পুরো এলাকায় আতঙ্ক ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। দোকানপাট বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। শিক্ষার্থীদের অনেকে অলিগলিতে ঢুকে পড়লে সেখানেও খুঁজে বের করে হামলা করা হয়। তার সহপাঠীরা বলেন, মৃত্যুর আগের দিন ওয়াসিম সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যমে একটি পোস্ট দেয়। পোস্টটিতে সে লিখেছিল, “সাধারণ শিক্ষার্থীদের পাশে আছে আমার প্রাণের সংগঠন। আমি এই পরিচয়েই শহীদ হবো।”

Wassim Akram was the first martyr of the anti-discrimination student movement in Chattogram. On July 16th, at around 3 PM, Wassim was martyred during a clash between protesters and police and Chhatra League members in the Muradpur area of Chattogram. Wassim was a third-year student in the Department of Sociology at Chattogram College and a member of the Chattogram College Chhatra Dal's convening committee. He resided in a mess in the Chawkbazar area. In conversations with this correspondent, Wassim's classmates Imran Hossain and Touhidul Islam said that Wassim had been active since the beginning of the anti-discrimination movement. He participated in every program in the city. Even as the movement gradually turned violent, he did not give up. Instead, like his other comrades, he was inspired by an even greater spirit of struggle. Eyewitnesses reported that the situation turned aggressive in mid-July. They learned that from noon on July 16th, Chhatra League and Jubo League activists took positions at various intersections in the city. They vandalized a bus in the two-number gate area. From 3 PM, clashes occurred between quota movement activists and Chhatra League-Jubo League members and the police in the Muradpur, 2-Number Gate, and Sholoshahar areas. Although the police initially used batons, they later opened fire. During this time, several armed individuals in plain clothes were seen firing alongside the police. Several cocktails were also detonated. The protesters scattered and began running in different directions. Later, they started throwing bricks and stones. The chase and counter-chase continued for a long time. Panic spread throughout the area. Shops were closed. Many students who entered the alleys were also hunted down and attacked there. His classmates said that the day before his death, Wassim made a post on social media. In the post, he wrote, "My beloved organization is by the side of the general students. I will be martyred with this identity."
