‘মেহেদীর বুক ছিল অসংখ্য বুলেটে ঝাঁঝরা। ক্লান্তিতে ভরা চোখমুখ। মুখমণ্ডল দেখে মনে হয়েছে যেন দীর্ঘ ক্লান্তির পর প্রশান্তিতে ঘুমিয়ে আছেন। আইসিইউয়ের বেডে চোখ বন্ধ করা মেহেদীকে দেখে বুঝিনি সে বেঁচে নেই, আর কোনদিন চোখ খুলবে না।’ কান্নাজড়িত কন্ঠে কথাগুলো বলছিলেন সাংবাদিক মেহেদী হাসানের স্ত্রী ফারহানা নীপা। নীপা বলেন, দুপুরের দিকে মোবাইলে কল দিয়ে বলেছিলাম, ‘আজ সকাল থেকে আমার মনটা জানি কেমন করছে। তুমি চলে আসো।’ আমাকে ধমক দিয়ে মেহেদী বলেছিল, ‘আমি দায়িত্ব পালন করছি। এটা আমার পেশা।’ গত ১৮ জুলাই রাজধানীর যাত্রাবাড়িতে বৈষম্য বিরোধী ছাত্র-জনতার সাথে পুলিশের সংঘর্ষ চলাকালে ঢাকা টাইমস’র সিনিয়র রিপোর্টার মেহেদী হাসান(৩১) ওই এলাকায় পেশাগত দায়িত্ব পালন করছিলেন। এ সময় পুলিশের ছোঁড়া গুলিতে তিনি শহিদ হন।

Seeing Mehedi lying in the ICU bed with his eyes closed, I couldn't understand that he was no more, and would never open his eyes again. These words were spoken by Farhana Nipa, the wife of journalist Mehedi Hasan, with a tearful voice. Nipa said, "I called him on his mobile phone around noon and said, 'My mind is not feeling right since morning, please come back.' Mehedi scolded me and said, 'I am performing my duty, it's my profession.'" On July 18, during a clash between anti-discrimination student protesters and police in Jatrabari, Dhaka, Mehedi Hasan, a senior reporter for the Dhaka Times, was performing his professional duties in the area when he was martyred by police gunfire. He was 31 years old.
