আমি হৃদয় চন্দ্র তরুয়া। পিতা রতন তরুয়া। মাতা অর্চনা রানী। আমার বাবা একজন নিম্নবিত্ত শ্রমজীবী মানুষ। তিনিই আমাদের পরিবারের একমাত্র আয়ের উৎস। আমার বাবা পেশায় একজন কাঠমিস্ত্রি। অন্যের দোকানে দৈনিক বেতনে কাজ করেন। সেখান থেকে যা পান, তা দিয়েই আমাদের পরিবারের ভরণপোষণ চলে।

আমার বাবার মাসিক আয় গড়ে ১২ হাজার টাকার মতো। এই টাকায় পটুয়াখালীর মতো একটা জেলা শহরে ভাড়া থাকা, খাওয়াদাওয়া, আমার লেখাপড়ার খরচ ইত্যাদি চলে। আমি এখন চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইতিহাস বিভাগে পড়ি। অনেকের কাছে এটা সামান্য কিছু হলেও আমার কাছে, আমার পরিবারের কাছে অনেক।

বিদ্যালয়ে বা কলেজে পড়াকালীন সময়ে আমার পড়ালেখার খরচ বাবা মোটামুটি কষ্ট হলেও চালিয়ে নিতে পারতেন, কারণ তখন বাসায় থেকে পড়াশোনা করতাম। কিন্তু বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ওঠার পর থেকে আমার থাকা, খাওয়াদাওয়া, পড়াশোনা ও অন্যান্য খরচ মিলিয়ে প্রায় ৫ হাজার টাকা খরচ হয়। তাই আমার এই খরচের টাকার জোগাতে আমার বাবার বেশ কষ্ট করতে হচ্ছে। তা ছাড়া আমার বাবার বয়সও বেড়েছে। যার কারণে এখন আর আগের মতো কাজ করতে পারেন না। তার ওপর বাজারে দ্রব্যমূল্যের ঊর্ধ্বগতি। সব মিলিয়ে আমার বাবার পক্ষে পরিবারের সকল ভরণপোষণ, পাশাপাশি আমার লেখাপড়ার খরচ চালিয়ে যাওয়া কষ্টসাধ্য হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে। আমার বাবার পৈতৃক সম্পত্তিও নেই বা কোনো স্থায়ী সম্পদ বাড়ি, কৃষিজমি বা কোনো অর্থও জমা নেই, যা দিয়ে এই প্রতিকূল অবস্থা কাটিয়ে ওঠা সম্ভব।

আমি নিজ থেকে কিছু আয়ের চেষ্টা চালাচ্ছি, যেমন টিউশনি। কিন্তু চট্টগ্রাম আমার জন্য নতুন শহর। এখানকার কোনো মানুষও আমার পরিচিত না। যার কারণে টিউশনি পাওয়াটা আমার পক্ষে দুরূহ ব্যাপার হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে। তা ছাড়া আমাদের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, চট্টগ্রাম থেকে ২৩-২৫ কিলোমিটার দূরে। শাটল ট্রেনে শহরে যেতে ১ ঘণ্টা ১৫ মিনিট লাগে। শহর অনেক দূরে হওয়ায় টিউশনি খোঁজাটাও সময় ও কষ্টসাধ্য। তার ওপরে চট্টগ্রামে টিউশনি নিয়েও ব্যবসা চলে। কারও বা কোনো প্রতিষ্ঠান থেকে টিউশনি পেতে হলে একটা বড় পরিমাণের টাকা তাদের দিতে হয়। যেটা আমার মতো নিম্নবিত্ত পরিবারের স্টুডেন্টের জন্য একটু বেশিই কষ্টের। তাই এমন অবস্থায় আমি যদি কোনো প্রকার বৃত্তি পেতে পারি, সেটা আমার পরিবার ও আমার লেখাপড়ার জন্য সুবিধার হবে।

I am Hridoy Chandra Taruya. My father is Ratan Taruya and my mother is Archana Rani. My father is a low-income laborer, the sole breadwinner of our family. He works as a carpenter, hired by others on a daily wage basis, and our family is supported by the income he earns.

My father's monthly income is about 12,000 taka. This is what we live on in a district town like Patuakhali, covering our rent, food, and my education expenses. I am currently studying in the history department at the University of Chittagong. While this might seem like a small amount to many, it is a lot for me and my family.

During my school and college days, my father managed to bear my educational expenses with some difficulty since I was living at home. However, after I got into the university, my living expenses, food, education, and other costs total around 5,000 taka per month. This has put a strain on my father. Moreover, his age is increasing, and he is no longer able to work as he used to. The rising cost of living in the market has added to our troubles, making it challenging for my father to support our family and cover my educational expenses.

I am trying to earn some income on my own by giving tuition. However, Chittagong is a new city for me, and I do not know anyone here. This has made it difficult for me to find tuition. Additionally, our university is about 23-25 kilometers away from Chittagong, and it takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach the city by shuttle train. The distance and time it takes to travel to the city make it hard to search for tuition. Moreover, giving tuition in Chittagong has become a business, and one has to pay a significant amount to individuals or institutions to get tuition. This is even more challenging for a student from a low-income family like me. Therefore, if I could get any kind of scholarship, it would be beneficial for my family and my education.

Cause

On 18 July, a clash broke out between police and the ruling party men and students demonstrating for quota reform in Bahaddarhat, Chittagong. At that time, Hridoy, a third-year student of the History Department of Chittagong University, was shot. After spending four days in the ICU, he died on 23 July at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors said that Hridoy's lungs were damaged due to the bullet.

Hridoy's home is in Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali. His father is Ratan Chandra Taruwa and his mother is Archana Rani. Hridoy's older sister, Mitu Rani, is married. Although they are from Mirzaganj, Hridoy's family lives in a rented house in the New Market area of Patuakhali Sadar.

Hridoy's father is a carpenter, and his mother, despite being a heart patient, works at home. This couple wanted to make their only son, Hridoy, a student of Chittagong University, through their hard-earned money. Hridoy also wanted to one day alleviate all the suffering of his parents and bring a smile to their faces. Whenever he called, he would talk about his dream, but a bullet ended everything.
