কোটা সংস্কার আন্দোলন ঘিরে পরিস্থিতি উত্তপ্ত হয়ে উঠলে গত ১৬ জুলাই দেশের সব শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান বন্ধ ঘোষণা করে সরকার। মাদ্রাসাছাত্র ছোট ভাইকে বাড়িতে আনতে ১৮ জুলাই নরসিংদী থেকে ঢাকার উদ্দেশে রওনা হন চিকিৎসক সজীব সরকার। যাত্রাপথে চাচাতো ভাই অনিকুর রহমান অনিককে খুদে বার্তায় জানিয়েছিলেন, ‘রাস্তার অবস্থা ভালো না। যাতে নিরাপদে ফিরতে পারি, সে জন্য দোয়া করিস।’ ঘণ্টাখানেক পর তাঁর মোবাইল ফোনে কল করেন অনিক। কিন্তু ফোনের অপর প্রান্তে অচেনা কণ্ঠ। ওই ব্যক্তি তাঁকে বলেন, ‘উত্তরা আধুনিক হাসপাতালে ডা. সজীবের লাশ পড়ে আছে, দ্রুত এসে নিয়ে যান, পুলিশে ঝামেলা করছে।’ অনিক বলেন, কথাটি প্রথমে বিশ্বাস হয়নি। আমিও চিকিৎসক। সেই সুবাদে ওই হাসপাতালের অনেকের সঙ্গে আমার পরিচয় আছে। তাদের ফোন দিয়ে বলি খোঁজ নিতে। কিছুক্ষণ পর তারা জানান, ঘটনা সত্য। গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে ডা. সজীব মারা গেছেন। এর পর বিষয়টি পরিবারকে জানাই। সজীব সরকারের বাড়ি নরসিংদী সদরের জেলখানা মোড় এলাকায়। তিনি গাজীপুরের তায়রুন্নেছা মেমোরিয়াল মেডিকেল কলেজ থেকে ২০২০ সালে এমবিবিএস পাস করেন। ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়া মেডিকেল কলেজের প্রভাষক ছিলেন। আড়াই বছর আগে বিয়ে করেন সজীব। তিন ভাই-বোনের মধ্যে তিনি সবার বড়। বাবা হালিম সরকার সরকারি চাকরিজীবী। আগামী বছর অবসরে যাবেন তিনি। মা ঝর্ণা বেগম গৃহিণী। অনিক জানান, সজীবের ছোট ভাই আব্দুল্লাহ উত্তরার তিন নম্বর সেক্টরের আশরাফুল উলুম মাদ্রাসায় পড়েন। ১৮ জুলাই বিভিন্ন স্থানে পুলিশ ও আন্দোলনকারীদের মধ্যে সংঘর্ষ চলছিল। তেমন গাড়ি না চলায় তাকে আনতে সিএনজিচালিত অটোরিকশায় রওনা দেন সজীব। এর পর রিকশায় করে উত্তরার দিকে যাচ্ছিলেন। বিকেল সাড়ে ৪টার দিকে আজমপুর এলাকায় সংঘর্ষের মধ্যে পড়েন তিনি। চিকিৎসকদের বরাত দিয়ে অনিক বলেন, প্রথমে ডা. সজীবের পেটে লাথি দেওয়া হয়। আঘাত সইতে না পেরে তিনি বসে পড়েন। এ অবস্থায় এক ফুট দূরত্বের মধ্যে ওপর থেকে তাঁর বুকে গুলি করা হয়। গুলিটি হার্টে লেগে ডান দিকের স্কাপুলার (কাঁধের হাড়) নিচে দিয়ে বের হয়ে যায়। গুলি লাগার ১ মিনিটের মধ্যে সজীবের মৃত্যু হয়। ইন্টারনেট সেবা বন্ধ থাকায় পরিচিত অনেকেই সজীব সরকারের মৃত্যুর খবর পরে পেয়েছেন। তারা ফেসবুকে তাঁর ছবিসহ পোস্ট দিয়ে শোক প্রকাশ করেছেন। রাইয়ান মোহাম্মদ মাহি নামে একজন লিখেছেন, আপন ভাইয়ের মতো সম্পর্ক গড়ে উঠেছিল তাঁর সঙ্গে। ভাবতেই বুক ফেটে যাচ্ছে। বিশ্বাস করতে পারছি না, তিনি আর আমাদের মাঝে নেই। তায়রুন্নেসা মেমোরিয়াল মেডিকেল কলেজ ও হাসপাতালের কর্মকর্তা এখলাছুর নেছা বলেন, আমাদের চিকিৎসকরা জানিয়েছেন, আন্দোলনের মধ্যে গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে ডা. সজীব মারা গেছেন। তিনি তায়রুন্নেসা মেমোরিয়াল মেডিকেলের ২০১১-১২ বর্ষের শিক্ষার্থী ছিলেন।

Anik said that Dr. Sajib's younger brother, Abdullah, is a student at the Ashraf ul Ulum Madrasa in Sector 3 of Uttara. On July 18, there were clashes between police and protesters in various places, and due to the lack of transportation, Dr. Sajib went to pick up his brother in a CNG-powered autorickshaw. After that, he was traveling to Uttara by rickshaw. Around 4:30 pm, he was caught in the clashes in the Ajampur area. According to doctors, as quoted by Anik, Dr. Sajib was first kicked in the stomach. Unable to withstand the pain, he sat down. In this state, he was shot in the chest from a distance of about one foot. The bullet hit his heart and exited through the scapula on the right side. Dr. Sajib died within a minute of being shot. Due to the internet being shut down, many acquaintances learned of Dr. Sajib Sarker's death later. They expressed their condolences on Facebook by posting his picture. Raiyan Mohammad Mahi wrote that he had a brotherly relationship with Dr. Sajib and couldn't believe he was no longer among them. Tayrunnessa Memorial Medical College and Hospital official Ekhlachur Nesha said that their doctors informed them that Dr. Sajib was killed by gunfire during the protests. He was a student of the 2011-2012 batch at Tayrunnessa Memorial Medical College.
