১৯ জুলাই ২০২৪ জুম্মার নামাজের পর ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় সংলগ্ন এলাকায়, পুলিশের গুলিতে মৃত্যুবরণ করেন একতা কলেজ বরিশালের এইচএসসি ২য় বর্ষের ছাত্র মারুফ হোসাইন।

মারুফের লাশ আনতে তার বাবা ইদ্রিস বক্স ১৯ তারিখ সন্ধায় ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে যান। কিন্তু পুলিশ এবং হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষ তাকে লাশ দিতে অস্বীকৃতি জানায়। অসংখ্য লাশের সাথে মারুফের লাশও মেঝেতে অবহেলায় পড়ে থাকে। মারুফের বাবা ছেলের লাশের বিষয়ে অকাট্য প্রমাণ দিলেও তারা লাশটি দেয়নি। পরের দিন আবারও তিনি কারফিউর মধ্যে জীবনের ঝুঁকি নিয়ে ছেলের লাশ আনতে যান। কিন্তু এদিনও পুলিশ এবং হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষ তাকে লাশ দেয়নি। বরং পুলিশের সাথে যুক্ত হয় আওয়ামী লীগ এবং ছাত্রলীগের লোকজন। তারা মারুফ এবং তার বাবাকে সন্ত্রাসী, টোকাই উপাধি দেয়। মারুফের বাবাকে অকথ্য ভাষায় গালমন্দ করে এবং নির্যাতনের হুমকি দেয়। বলা হয় ছেলে সড়ক দূর্ঘটনায় মারা গেছে এই মর্মে স্বাক্ষর করে কাগজ দিলে তারা বিবেচনা করা দেখবে!  ২য় দিনও তিনি ছেলের লাশ ছাড়াই ঘরে ফেরেন।

এদিকে বরিশালে মারুফের বাড়িতে চলছে শোকের মাতম। লাশ দাফনের জন্য খোঁড়া কবর এবং হাজারো মানুষ অপেক্ষায় থাকে।

৩য় দিন আবারও মারুফের বাবা ছেলের লাশের আনতে ঢাকা মেডিকেলের মর্গে উপস্থিত হন। এদিন তার ছেলের লাশ বেওয়ারিশ এর তালিকায় ঢোকানোর চক্রান্ত শুরু হয়, অন্যদিকে অযত্নে ফেলে রাখা তিনদিনের পুরানো লাশে পচন ধরে দুর্গন্ধ বের হচ্ছে — এসব দেখে মারুফের বাবার অনেক আকুতি এবং আর্তচিৎকারে হাসপাতাল ও পুলিশ কঠোরভাবে হুমকি দেয় যে লাশ দেয়া যেতে পারে এই শর্তে যে, 'তার ছেলের মৃত্যু হয়েছে রাস্তা পার হতে গিয়ে সড়ক দুর্ঘটনায়' এটা লিখে কাগজে স্বাক্ষর করতে হবে এবং কোনভাবেই লাশ গ্রামের বাড়িতে নেয়া যাবে না। 
মারুফের অসহায় বাবা তাতেই রাজি হয়ে যান এবং সব প্রক্রিয়া শেষ করে ঢাকার পুর্ব বাড্ডা গোরস্তানে দাফন করেন তার প্রিয় সন্তানকে।

অবাক করার বিষয় হলো, যেই ছেলের মৃত্যুর কারণ হিসেবে ১৯ জুলাই, হাসপাতাল উল্লেখ করলো 'গানশট ইনজুরি', পরবর্তীতে তাকে সড়ক দূর্ঘটনায় নিহত বলে চালিয়ে দেয়া হলো?  রাস্তা পার হতে গিয়ে সড়ক দুর্ঘটনায়? কি অবাক করা কথা! তাহলে সেই সড়ক দুর্ঘটনার সংবাদ কোথায়? রাস্তা পার হতে গিয়ে সড়ক দুর্ঘটনায় নিহত হলে তো জিডি হওয়ার কথা কোথায় সে জিডি?

On July 19, 2024, after the Jumma prayer, Maruf Hossain, an HSC second-year student of Ekota College Barisal, was shot dead by police in the area adjacent to Brac University.

Maruf's father, Idris Box, went to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the evening of the 19th to collect his son's body. However, the police and hospital authorities refused to hand over the body. Maruf's body was left lying on the floor along with many other bodies. Despite Maruf's father providing conclusive evidence of his son's identity, the authorities refused to hand over the body. The next day, he again risked his life to collect his son's body amidst the curfew, but the police and hospital authorities still refused to hand it over. Instead, people associated with the Awami League and Chhatra League got involved and called Maruf and his father terrorists and hoodlums. They verbally abused Maruf's father and threatened him with torture. They suggested that if Maruf's father signed a document stating that his son had died in a road accident, they would consider handing over the body. On the second day, Maruf's father returned home without his son's body.

Meanwhile, in Barisal, Maruf's family was mourning his death, and many people were waiting to participate in his funeral. On the third day, Maruf's father again went to the Dhaka Medical morgue to collect his son's body. On this day, a conspiracy began to include Maruf's body in the list of unidentified bodies, and the three-day-old body, which had been left unattended, began to decompose and emit a foul odor. Maruf's father was deeply distressed by this sight, and the hospital and police authorities threatened him, saying that they would only hand over the body if he agreed to sign a document stating that his son had died in a road accident. Maruf's father reluctantly agreed and eventually buried his son in the East Badda graveyard in Dhaka.

What is surprising is that the hospital initially stated the cause of Maruf's death as "gunshot injury," but later claimed that he had died in a road accident while crossing the road. Where is the news of this road accident? If Maruf had indeed died in a road accident, there should be a general diary (GD) filed, but there is no record of it.
