১৯ জুলাই বিকালে কেরানীগঞ্জের বাসা থেকে বের হন উপজেলার ইস্পাহানি ডিগ্রি কলেজের অনার্স প্রথম বর্ষের ছাত্র রিয়াজ হোসেন। কোটা সংস্কার আন্দোলনে যোগ দিতে অন্যান্য শিক্ষার্থীর সঙ্গে সে বসিলা ব্রিজ পেরিয়ে মোহাম্মদপুরে অবস্থান নেয়। যাওয়ার সময় মা শেফালী বেগম তাকে যেতে বারণ করেন।
মায়ের বারণ শুনে রিয়াজ বলে- সবাই যদি ঘরে থাকে তাহলে শিক্ষার্থীদের যৌক্তিক দাবি কখনো পূরণ হবে না। এরপর সে ঘর থেকে বেরিয়ে যায়। এই যাওয়াই ছিল তার শেষ যাত্রা। ওই দিন বিকালে মোহাম্মদপুর এলাকায় মাথায় গুলি লেগে নিহত হন রিয়াজ।

লাশ পড়ে ছিল সোহরাওয়ার্দী হাসপাতালের মর্গে। অনেক জায়গায় খোঁজার পর ২০ জুলাই বিকেলে ওই হাসপাতালের মর্গে রিয়াজের লাশের সন্ধান পায় পরিবার। কেরানীগঞ্জ মডেল থানার তারানগর ইউনিয়নের ছোট ভাওয়াল গ্রামের বাসিন্দা আসাব উদ্দিনের তিন ছেলে ও এক মেয়ের মধ্যে সবার ছোট ছিল রিয়াজ।

বোন আফরোজা বলেন, বাবা ও দুই ভাই কৃষিকাজ করে কোনো রকম সংসার চালায়। সবার ছোট রিয়াজকে নিয়ে আমাদের অনেক স্বপ্ন ছিল। ওর ইচ্ছা ছিল পড়াশোনা শেষ করে সরকারি চাকরি করবে। ও বলতো, এই আন্দোলন না করলে মেধাবীদের অনেকেই নাকি চাকরি পাবে না।

রিয়াজের মা শেফালী বেগম বলেন, আমার কলিজার টুকরা সন্তানকে যারা মেরেছে আল্লাহপাক তাদের উপযুক্ত বিচার করবেন। এলাকার চেয়ারম্যান, মেম্বার কেউ খোঁজ নেয় নাই। আমার কোনো দাবি নাই। আমার ছেলে যে উদ্দেশ্য নিয়ে শহিদ হয়েছে তা যেন বাস্তবায়ন হয়। দেশের মানুষ যেন আমার ছেলেকে ভুলে না যায়।

জানা যায়, বাবার সঙ্গে কৃষিকাজের পাশাপাশি লেখাপড়া চালিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন রিয়াজ। বাড়তি উপার্জনের আশায় কিছুদিন ধরে একটি কুরিয়ার সার্ভিসে ডেলিভারি ম্যানের চাকরি নেন। ইচ্ছে ছিল সরকারি চাকরিজীবী হওয়ার।

বাবা আসাব উদ্দিন বলেন, আমার ছেলে কোনো দল করত না। আমার ছেলেকে কেন এভাবে মরতে হলো? আমি ছেলে হত্যার বিচার চাই।

১৩ আগস্ট সকালে সাবেক ডাকসুর ভিপি আমানুল্লাহ আমান শহীদ রিয়াজের আত্মার মাগফেরাত কামনা করতে গিয়ে বলেন, বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনে সারা দেশব্যাপী শহীদের আত্মার মাগফেরাত কামনা করছি। কেরানীগঞ্জে একমাত্র বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনে শহীদ রিয়াজ আমাদের গর্ব। শহীদ রিয়াজের আত্মত্যাগের বিনিময় বাংলার ঘরে ঘরে জন্ম নিয়েছেন অসংখ্য রিয়াজ। তার স্মৃতি ধরে রাখার জন্য তিনি কেরানীগঞ্জের গাটাচর চত্বর শহীদ রিয়াজ হোসেন চত্বর হবে বলে ঘোষণা দেন। এই চত্বরের মাধ্যমে শহীদ রিয়াজ আমাদের মাঝে বেঁচে থাকবে বলে জানান। গত মঙ্গলবার সকালে বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলনে শহীদ রিয়াজের কবর জিয়ারত করে কেরানীগঞ্জের তারানগর ছোট বাওয়াল কবরস্থান ঈদগাহ ময়দানে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন। পরে তিনি শহীদ রিয়াজের পরিবারের কাছে নগদ অর্থ প্রদান করেন।

On the afternoon of July 19, Riad Hossain, a first-year honors student of Islami Degree College in Keraniganj, left his home to join the quota reform movement with other students and took position in Mohammadpur after crossing the Basila Bridge. At the time of leaving, his mother, Shefali Begum, forbade him to go. 
After hearing his mother's forbiddance, Riad said, "If everyone stays at home, the logical demands of the students will never be met." Then he left the house. This was his last trip. On that afternoon, Riad was killed by a gunshot in the Mohammadpur area. 
The body was lying in the morgue of Sohrawardi Hospital. After searching many places, the family found Riad's body in the morgue of the hospital on the afternoon of July 20. Riad was the youngest of three sons and one daughter of Asab Uddin, a resident of Chhotobhawal village in Taranganj union of Keraniganj Model Police Station. 
Sister Afrosa said, "We had many dreams about Riad. His desire was to finish his studies and get a government job after completing his studies. He used to say that if this movement is not done, many meritorious students will not get jobs." 
Riad's mother, Shefali Begum, said, "I hope that Allah will punish those who killed my child. The chairman and member of the area did not inquire about us. I have no demands. I just want my son's purpose to be implemented. 
It is known that Riad was continuing his studies along with his father's farming work. In the hope of extra income, he took a job as a delivery man in a courier service for some time. He had a desire to be a government employee. 
Father Asab Uddin said, "My son did not do any politics. Why did my son have to die like this? I want the trial of my son's murder." 
On the morning of August 13, former VP of Dhaka University Students' Union Amanullah Aman went to the grave of martyr Riad and said, "I am praying for the salvation of the souls of the martyrs who were killed in the anti-quota student movement across the country. 
The martyr Riad, who was killed in the anti-quota student movement in Keraniganj, is our pride. In exchange for the sacrifice of martyr Riad, countless Riad have been born in every home of Bengal. 
To keep his memory alive, the Ghatarchar chowrasta in Keraniganj will be named after martyr Riad Hossain, he announced. Through this square, martyr Riad will live among us, he said. 
On Tuesday morning, Amanullah Aman visited the grave of martyr Riad in the Taranganj small Bowal graveyard and Eidgah ground in Keraniganj and said these words. Later, he handed over cash to Riad's family.
