জুমার নামাজ শেষে বাসায় ফিরেছিলেন মোবারক হোসেন। তখন তাঁর আদরের মেয়েটি চিপস খাওয়ার বায়না ধরে। তিনিও সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বাসার নিচে দোকানে যান। তবে সেখান থেকে তিনি চিপস কিনে বাসায় ফিরতে পারেননি। ঢাকার রায়েরবাগে কোটা সংস্কার আন্দোলন ঘিরে সংঘর্ষে গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে নিহত হয়েছেন তিনি। মোবারকের (৩৩) বাড়ি কিশোরগঞ্জের করিমগঞ্জ পৌরসভার পূর্ব নয়াকান্দি এলাকায়। তাঁর বাবার নাম আবুল হাশেম। মোবারক স্ত্রী–সন্তানকে নিয়ে ঢাকার রায়েরবাগের আপন বাজার এলাকায় ভাড়া বাসায় থাকতেন। তাঁর সঙ্গে থাকতেন মা, ভাই ও ভাইয়ের স্ত্রী। ১৯ জুলাই তাঁদের বাসার নিচে কোটা সংস্কার আন্দোলন ঘিরে ব্যাপক সংঘর্ষ হয়। দুপুরে বাসার নিচে দোকানে গিয়ে গুলিবিদ্ধ হন মোবারক। দুই দিন পর গ্রামের বাড়িতে তাঁকে দাফন করা হয়। গত মঙ্গলবার বিকেলে করিমগঞ্জে পূর্ব নয়াকান্দি এলাকায় গিয়ে দেখা যায়, মোবারকের বাড়িতে সুনসান নীরবতা। ঘরে ঢুকতেই প্রথম কক্ষে দেখা যায় হাঁড়িপাতিল, রান্নার চুলাসহ সংসারের জিনিসপত্র ও আসবাব স্তূপ করে রাখা। মোবারক নিহত হওয়ার পর পরিবারের সদস্যরা এগুলো নিয়ে বাড়িতে চলে এসেছেন। ঘরের আরেক কক্ষে নিহত মোবারকের মেয়ে আদিবা চিপস নিয়ে দৌড়াদৌড়ি ও খেলাধুলা করছে। আড়াই বছরের আদিবা এখনো বুঝতেই পারছে না তার জন্য চিপস কিনতে গিয়ে কী ঘটেছে। নিহত মোবারকের ছোট ভাই মোশারফ হোসেন বলেন, ‘ওই দিন (১৯ জুলাই) ছিল শুক্রবার। বাসার নিচে আন্দোলনকারীদের সঙ্গে পুলিশের ব্যাপক সংঘর্ষ হয়। ভাই (মোবারক) বাসার পাশের মসজিদ থেকে জুমার নামাজ আদায় করে ঘরে ফিরেছিল। আদিবা তখন চিপস খাওয়ার জন্য বায়না ধরে। সে বাসার নিচের দোকানে চিপস আনতে যায়। তার মাথার এক পাশ দিয়ে গুলি ঢুকে আরেক পাশ দিয়ে বের হয়ে যায়। তাকে ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাই। হাসপাতালের চিকিৎসক তাকে মৃত ঘোষণা করেন।’ মোশারফ হোসেন আরও বলেন, ছোট থাকতেই বাবা তাঁদের ছেড়ে চলে গেছেন। মা ঢাকায় গৃহকর্মীরা কাজ করে তাঁদের বড় করেছেন। দুই ভাই নবাবপুর এলাকার একটি বৈদ্যুতিক সরঞ্জামের দোকানে বিক্রয়কর্মী হিসেবে কাজ করতেন। মাসে প্রায় ৩০ হাজার টাকার মতো বেতন পেতেন। সংসারটা কোনো রকমে চলে যাচ্ছিল। কিন্তু ভাইয়ের মৃত্যুতে হঠাৎ যেন সব এলোমেলো হয়ে গেল। তাঁর স্ত্রী ও দেড় বছরের একটি সন্তান রয়েছে। একার আয়ে ছয় সদস্যের এই সংসার কীভাবে চলবে? স্বামীকে হারিয়ে শোকে পাথর শান্তা আক্তার। একপর্যায়ে তিনি মেয়েকে কোলে টেনে নিয়ে হাউমাউ করে কেঁদে ফেলেন। তিনি বলেন, ‘কী অপরাধ ছিল আমার স্বামীর? কেন তাঁকে এভাবে গুলিতে মরতে হলো? এই ছোট্ট শিশুকে নিয়ে কোথায় দাঁড়াব? কী করব? কিছুই বুঝতেছি না।’ করিমগঞ্জ পৌরসভার সাবেক কাউন্সিলর আবদুল হান্নান মোবারকের কবর দেখিয়ে বলেন, ‘মোবারক কোনো রাজনীতি, আন্দোলন বা ঝামেলায় জড়িত ছিল না। ছোটবেলা থেকেই দেখে আসছি তাকে। খুবই নিরীহ আর অমায়িক ছেলে ছিল মোবারক। তার এই অকালমৃত্যুতে শোকাহত এলাকাবাসী। এখন সরকারের উচিত পরিবারের পাশে দাঁড়ানো এবং ওর স্ত্রী–সন্তানকে সহায়তা করা।’

Mobarok's (33) home is in the east of Noyakandi area of Karimganj municipality in Kishoreganj. His father's name is Abu Hashem. Mobarok lived in a rented house in the Apna Bazar area of Rayebari, Dhaka, with his wife and children. His mother, brother, and brother's wife also lived with him. On July 19, a large clash took place over the quota reform movement below their house. In the afternoon, Mobarok went to the store below the house and was shot. Two days later, he was buried at his village home. On the last Tuesday, when I went to Mobarok's home in the east Noyakandi area of Karimganj, I saw a quiet silence. Upon entering the house, I saw household items and furniture piled up in the first room. After Mobarok's death, his family members brought these items back to their village home. In another room, Mobarok's daughter, Adiba, was running and playing with chips. Adiba, who is two and a half years old, still does not understand what happened when her father went to buy chips for her. Mosharaf Hossain, Mobarok's younger brother, said, "That day (July 19) was a Friday. There was a large clash between the protesters and the police below our house. My brother (Mobarok) came home after praying at the mosque next to our house. Adiba then demanded chips, and he went to the store below our house to buy them. A bullet entered one side of his head and came out the other. I took him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead." Mosharaf Hossain further said that their father had passed away when they were young. Their mother had raised them by working as a housemaid in Dhaka. The two brothers worked as salesmen at an electrical equipment store in the Nababpur area, earning around 30,000 takas per month. They were barely making ends meet, but after Mobarok's death, everything became uncertain. Mobarok's wife, Shanta Akter, was shocked and grieving. At one point, she held her daughter in her arms and wept. She said, "What was my husband's crime? Why was he killed by a bullet? Where will I stand with this little child? What will I do? I don't understand anything." Abdul Hannan, a former councilor of Karimganj municipality, showed Mobarok's grave and said, "Mobarok was not involved in any politics, movement, or trouble. I have known him since he was a child. He was a very simple and kind boy. His untimely death has saddened the locals. Now, the government should stand by his family and help his wife and child."
