ভ্যানে করে দোকানে দোকানে মালামাল পৌঁছে দিয়ে যা আয় করতেন, তা দিয়েই চার সদস্যের সংসার চালাতেন জাহাঙ্গীর হোসেন মৃধা (৫১)। কোটা আন্দোলন ঘিরে সংঘাতমুখর পরিস্থিতিতে চার দিন তিনি ভ্যান চালাতে পারেননি। তাই বাধ্য হয়েই ১৯ জুলাই সকালে ভ্যান নিয়ে বের হন জাহাঙ্গীর। পরিকল্পনা ছিল সবজি কিনে, তা বিক্রি করে চাল-ডাল কিনে বাসায় ফিরবেন। এ জন্য তিনি ঢাকার যাত্রাবাড়ী এলাকায় যান। সেখানে সকাল ১০টার দিকে গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে মারা যান জাহাঙ্গীর।

জাহাঙ্গীর হোসেনের বাড়ি পটুয়াখালীর বাউফল উপজেলার মদনপুরা ইউনিয়নের দ্বিপাশা গ্রামে। ওই গ্রামের মঈনুদ্দিন মৃধার ছেলে তিনি। চার ভাই ও দুই বোনের মধ্যে সবার ছোট ছিলেন জাহাঙ্গীর। দরিদ্র পরিবারের সন্তান। পৈতৃক সূত্রে মাত্র দেড় শতাংশ জমির মালিক ছিলেন তিনি। যেখানে ঘর উঠিয়ে থাকার মতো সামর্থ্য ছিল না। তাই স্ত্রী লাইজু বেগমকে নিয়ে পাড়ি জমান ঢাকায়। বছরে এক-দুইবার বাড়ি আসতেন জাহাঙ্গীর। বাড়িতে নিজের ঘর না থাকায়, থাকতেন একই গ্রামে শ্বশুর মো. মোসলেম জোমাদ্দারের বাড়িতে।

গতকাল সোমবার দুপুরে দ্বিপাশা গ্রামে গিয়ে দেখা যায়, বাড়ির সামনে পুকুরপাড়ে জাহাঙ্গীর আলমের কবর। ১৯ জুলাই রাতে জানাজা শেষে পারিবারিক কবরস্থানে জাহাঙ্গীরকে দাফন করা হয়। দাফনের দুই দিন পর স্ত্রী লাইজু বেগম ১৮ বছরের মো. সুজন ও তিন বছরের ছেলে মো. শান্তকে নিয়ে ঢাকায় চলে যান।

নিহত জাহাঙ্গীরের বড় ভাই আবদুল গণি মৃধা (৬৭) প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ঢাকায় রায়েরবাগ বাসস্ট্যান্ড এলাকায় স্ত্রী ও দুই সন্তান নিয়ে ভাড়া বাসায় থাকতেন জাহাঙ্গীর। অভাবের কারণে ছেলে সুজনকে পড়াশোনা করাতে পারেননি। সুজন বর্তমানে একটি দোকানে কাজ শিখছেন। একমাত্র উপার্জনক্ষম ব্যক্তিকে হারিয়ে দিশাহারা হয়ে পড়েছে তাঁর ছোট ভাইয়ের পরিবারটি।

আবদুল গণি আরও বলেন, এ ঘটনায় তাঁরা মামলা করবেন না। কারণ, মামলা চালানোর মতো শক্তি ও সামর্থ্য কোনোটাই তাঁদের নেই। তিনি নিহত ভাইয়ের দুই ছেলে ও স্ত্রীর ভরণপোষণের দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার জন্য সরকারের প্রতি দাবি জানান।

Jahangir Hossain Mridha, 51, used to run his four-member family with the money he earned by delivering goods to shops in a van. Due to the conflict-ridden situation surrounding the quota movement, he was unable to drive his van for four days. Forced to do so, Jahangir set out with his van on the morning of July 19. His plan was to buy vegetables, sell them, buy rice and lentils, and return home. To do this, he went to the Jatrabari area of Dhaka. Around 10 am, he was shot and killed.

Jahangir Hossain's home is in the Dhighapasha village of Madanpura union in Baufal upazila of Patuakhali. He was the youngest of four brothers and two sisters. Born into a poor family, Jahangir owned only one and a half acres of land inherited from his father, which was not enough to build a house. So, he settled in Dhaka with his wife, Laizu Begum. Jahangir would visit his village once or twice a year. Since he did not have a house in the village, he would stay at his father-in-law's house in the same village.

Yesterday, Monday, a visit to Dhighapasha village revealed Jahangir's grave by the pond in front of his house. After his janaza on the night of July 19, he was buried in the family cemetery. Two days after the burial, his wife, Laizu Begum, left for Dhaka with their 18-year-old son, Mohammad Sujan, and three-year-old son, Mohammad Shant.

Jahangir's older brother, Abdul Gani Mridha, 67, told Prothom Alo that Jahangir lived in a rented house in the Rayebazar bus stand area of Dhaka with his wife and two children. Due to poverty, he could not provide education to his son Sujan, who is currently learning to work at a shop. The family has become directionless after losing their only earning member.

Abdul Gani further stated that they would not file a case regarding the incident because they do not have the strength or resources to pursue it. He appealed to the government to take responsibility for the livelihood of his deceased brother's wife and two children.
