বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র-জনতার আন্দোলনে রাজপথ উত্তাল। আন্দোলন দমাতে মরিয়া হয়ে উঠেছে সরকারের বিভিন্ন বাহিনী। এমন অশান্ত ও সহিংস পরিস্থিতিতে বাড়িতে থাকার জন্য পরিবারের অনুরোধ উপেক্ষা করে ‘ছাত্র ভাইদের’ সঙ্গে অন্যায়ের বিরুদ্ধে দাঁড়ানোর অদম্য সংকল্প নিয়ে বেরিয়েছিলেন মেহেদী। আর তাতেই শহীদ হন তিনি।

২০২৪ সালের ১৭ জুলাই থেকে বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলন সাধারণ মানুষের অংশগ্রহণে রূপ নেয় ছাত্র-জনতার অভ্যুত্থানে। এই আন্দোলন দমনে যখন আইন-শৃঙ্খলা রক্ষাকারী বাহিনী ব্যাপক দমন-পীড়ন শুরু করে, তখনই শহীদ হন মেহেদী।

মেহেদীর শোকাহত মা পারভীন আক্তার বলেন, 'আমার ছেলে ১৭ ও ১৮ জুলাই আন্দোলনে অংশ নেয়। ১৮ তারিখ রাতে আমি তাকে জোর করে বাড়ি ফিরিয়ে আনি। তখন অনেক মানুষ মারা যাচ্ছিল, তাই আমরা তাকে যেতে দিইনি।'

তিনি বলেন, ১৯ জুলাই সারাদিন ঘুমিয়ে ছিল মেহেদী। আসরের আজানের সময় সে জেগে ওঠে এবং জানতে চায় কেন তাকে জাগানো হয়নি। পারভীন বলেন, 'আমি বলি, রাস্তায় পরিস্থিতি খুব খারাপ, তাই ডাকিনি।'

কিন্তু মেহেদীর সংকল্প ছিল অবিচল। সে বলেছিল 'আমার ছাত্র ভাইরা রাস্তায় মরছে আর আপনি বলছেন আমি বাসায় থাকি? আমি কি এখনও শিশু? আমি ১৮ বছর বয়সী। আমাকে যেতে দিন।'

শেষমেশ যাত্রাবাড়ীর কুতুবখালীর ভাড়া বাসার দরজা তালাবদ্ধ করেও তাকে আটকাতে পারেননি তার বাবা মেহের আলী। 'আমি আন্দোলনে যাবই... প্রয়োজনে দেশের জন্য শহীদ হব,' বলেছিল মেহেদী।

মেহের আলী বলেন, 'আমরা তাকে ঘরে আটকে রাখার চেষ্টা করেছিলাম, কারণ রাস্তায় নির্বিচারে গুলি চলছিল। কিন্তু কিছুতেই আটকাতে পারিনি।'

বাড়ি ছাড়ার আগে মেহেদী গোসল করে, মায়ের দিকে অদ্ভুতভাবে তাকিয়ে থাকে অনেকক্ষণ। তারপর খেয়ে ১০ টাকা চায়, কিন্তু তখন পারভীনের হাতে কোনো টাকা ছিল না।

শেষ পর্যন্ত আসরের আজানের পর সে বাসা ছাড়ে। মাত্র ১০-১৫ মিনিট পরই কয়েকজন শিশু এসে বলে, মেহেদী গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়েছে এবং  শনিরআখড়ার একটি হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হয়েছে।

তখন শুরু হয় তার পরিবারের মরিয়া খোঁজ। শনিরআখড়ার হাসপাতালে না পেয়ে যাত্রাবাড়ীর সব হাসপাতালে খোঁজ করেন তারা। পরে জানতে পারেন, তাকে ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হয়েছে।

'কিন্তু আমরা যখন পৌঁছাই, তখন লাশ মর্গে। শুনে মনে হলো আকাশ ভেঙে পড়েছে,' বলেন পারভীন।

মর্গে লাশ দেখার সুযোগ না দিয়ে পুলিশ কাগজপত্র আনার জন্য যাত্রাবাড়ী থানায় যেতে বলে। পরদিন (২০ জুলাই) সকালে থানা গেলে পুলিশ খারাপ ব্যবহার করে। পারভীন বলেন, 'পুলিশ আমাদের গালিগালাজ করে, এমনকি গুলি করার হুমকিও দেয়।'

পরে সন্ধ্যায় এক পুলিশ সদস্য শাহবাগ থানায় যেতে বললে, ২১ জুলাই সকালে তারা আবার ঢাকা মেডিকেল যান এবং অনেক খোঁজাখুঁজির পর পুলিশের সহায়তায় লাশটি শনাক্ত করেন।

২১ জুলাই রাত ৯টার দিকে ময়নাতদন্ত শেষে লাশ বুঝে পায় পরিবার। সেদিন রাতেই তাকে জুরাইন কবরস্থানে দাফন করা হয়।

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has made the streets turbulent. The government's various forces are desperate to suppress the movement. Mehedi went out to stand against injustice with the 'student brothers', ignoring his family's request to stay home, and that's how he became a martyr.

The anti-discrimination student movement began to take shape as a student-people uprising with the participation of ordinary people from July 17, 2024. Mehedi was martyred when the law enforcement agencies started widespread repression to suppress the movement.

Mehedi's grieving mother, Parvin Akhtar, said, "My son participated in the movement on July 17 and 18. On the night of the 18th, I brought him back home by force. Many people were being killed, so we didn't let him go."

Parvin said that Mehedi slept all day on July 19. When he woke up at the time of the afternoon prayer, he asked why he wasn't woken up. Parvin said, "I told him that the situation on the road was very bad, so I didn't call him."

But Mehedi's determination was unwavering. He said, "My student brothers are dying on the road, and you're telling me to stay home? Am I still a child? I'm 18 years old. Let me go."

Finally, despite locking the door of their rented house in Kataban, Jatrabari, Mehedi's father, Meher Ali, couldn't stop him. Mehedi said, "I will participate in the movement... if necessary, I will become a martyr for the country."

Meher Ali said, "We tried to keep him locked in the house because there were indiscriminate shootings on the road. But we couldn't stop him."

Before leaving the house, Mehedi took a bath, stared at his mother for a long time, and then asked for 10 taka to buy tea, but Parvin didn't have any money at that time.

After the afternoon prayer, he finally left the house. Just 10-15 minutes later, a few children came and said that Mehedi had been shot and taken to a hospital in Shanir Akhara.

Then began the desperate search by his family. After not finding him at the hospital in Shanir Akhara, they searched all the hospitals in Jatrabari. Later, they found out that he had been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

But when they arrived, the body was in the morgue. Parvin said, "It felt like the sky had fallen."

The police didn't allow them to see the body in the morgue and instead asked them to go to the Jatrabari police station to collect the papers. The next day (July 20), when they went to the police station, the police behaved badly with them. Parvin said, "The police insulted us and even threatened to shoot us."

Later, in the evening, a police officer asked them to go to the Shahbagh police station. On July 21, in the morning, they went to Dhaka Medical again, and after a lot of searching, they identified the body with the help of the police.

The autopsy was completed on July 21, and the body was handed over to the family at around 9 pm. Mehedi was buried in the Jurain cemetery that night.
